Woodside’s Proposed Expansion of Gas Wells Could Threaten Whales and Wildlife in Marine Parks

As part of the plan to explore to find more gas fields off the West Australian coastline, Woodside wants to seismic blast in endangered whale habitat.

Greenpeace is working to raise awareness of the impact the expansion of the Woodside gas fields may have on endangered marine life and the overall impact on this pristine environment.

In the biggest fossil fuel project currently proposed in Australia Woodside wants to drill up to 80 gas wells off the Pilbara and Kimberley coast in northern WA. This poses a serious threat to wildlife at Ningaloo Reef, Scott Reef, Mermaid Sound, and the whale migration superhighway that runs along the coast.

Imagine the world climate if this project was completed. Woodside would be able to produce gas until 2070 if this is allowed to happen.

According to Greenpeace, The Burrup Hub – which includes the Scarborough, North West Shelf, and Browse projects – could impact 12 different marine parks, including Ningaloo Reef. It would put marine life at risk and lock Australia into more fossil fuels as the rest of the world shifts to cleaner, cheaper renewable energy.

Over its lifetime, the Burrup Hub will belch out 6.1 billion tonnes, 12 years of Australia’s emissions. Dredging, drilling, and seismic testing put 54 vulnerable marine species, like whales and turtles, at risk. https://www.greenpeace.org.au/act/woodside-campaign

Activists climb and document Woodside’s toxic oil tower from Greenpeace flagship Rainbow Warrior in the Indian Ocean and they have also found one submerged.

Activists in WA are being targeted by tough new laws for protesting against the Burrup Hub exploration for gas. There was a recent report on the 9th of October on The ABC program, 4 CornersRead more

Greenpeace is asking for support to stop the biggest fossil fuel project currently proposed in Australia to protect precious whales, dolphins, turtles – and our climate – from devastation. Individuals donating small amounts just once every four weeks will ensure Greenpeace has a stable base of funds to fight daily for a clean and safe future for our planet and all who call it home.
