What Does a Yogi or Magician Do?

16

A Yogi or Magician does one thing: they control their individual universe. They are not passive witnesses of an external reality that affects them and determines how they are but active participants in a continual practice of world creation. For them, life is not a random series of events but an intentional manifestation of their inner state.

The outer world is Maya or illusion, not because it’s not real but because it is ever-changing and malleable, so therefore, it is unreliable as a touchstone or psychological reference point. Maya, in its essence, is a dance of perception, a reflection of the mind’s interpretations and projections. To navigate this fluid reality, the Yogi or Magician seeks to understand and transcend the illusions that bind ordinary consciousness.

This transcendence does not mean rejecting the physical world but rather mastering its influence through heightened awareness and intentionality. They recognise that the external is a mirror of the internal, and by reshaping their inner world, they transform their experience of outer circumstances.

For the Yogi or Magician, meditation in its active (structured) and passive (Vipassana or Sati) forms is essential. Active meditation might involve focused techniques such as mantra chanting, visualization, or breath control (Pranayama), designed to harness and direct mental energy. Passive meditation, like Vipassana or mindfulness (Sati), involves observing thoughts and sensations without attachment or judgment, cultivating a state of equanimity and insight into the transient nature of reality.

This dual approach to meditation serves a higher purpose: mastery over the self. In structured practices, they develop concentration, willpower, and the ability to focus their creative energy. In passive meditation, they dissolve egoic tendencies, embracing impermanence and interconnectedness. Together, these practices form a holistic path toward self-realization and the conscious shaping of their universe.

Beyond meditation, the Yogi or Magician engages in rituals or disciplines that reinforce their understanding of reality. These might include studying sacred texts, performing symbolic acts, or using tools like Tarot, astrology, or alchemy to explore the interconnectedness of all things. Such practices are not ends in themselves but means to deepen their awareness and align their intentions with the fundamental laws of existence.

Ultimately, the work of a Yogi or Magician is about liberation. Liberation from the constraints of illusion, from the tyranny of reactive emotions, and the limitations of a fixed identity. They embody a paradoxical truth: by relinquishing attachment to the self, they gain mastery over their world. In this way, they become creators, harmonizing the inner and outer dimensions of life in a continuous act of magic and meditation.

Through their practice, they remind us of a profound lesson: reality is not something to be endured but something to be shaped, with awareness as the ultimate tool and transformation as the ultimate goal.
