Magnesium: The Mineral Uplifting Your Health

You won’t believe the difference it makes to your health and your sex life!

“I started using magnesium as a supplement for my patients in 1996 and over the years I have seen the amazing health benefits of this mineral from the positive feedback the patients have given me. I was so impressed with the results that I wrote a book titled Magnesium the Miracle Mineral – You won’t believe the difference it makes to your health and your sex life! “- Dr Sandra Cabot

It’s a big claim for a simple mineral but it’s true and unfortunately it’s not something that doctors are taught in medical school. Dr Cabot says she did not know that magnesium could improve the sex life of men until some of her male patients told her that it had made them more virile in the bedroom. They were very grateful for this somewhat unexpected effect of magnesium and were a little embarrassed to tell her, but for some reason they felt inclined to tell her. Magnesium must be taken everyday to get good results, as it does not work quickly like Viagra but it has a gradual effect on improving circulation to the sexual organs.

Magnesium is a mineral that has been used for centuries as a laxative in the form of high doses of the salts magnesium hydroxide, sulphate and oxide, and indeed in these forms it is an excellent laxative. This is because these forms of magnesium are poorly absorbed from the intestines and attract water into the intestines promoting a bowel action. For the same reason these salts of magnesium are unsuitable for supplementation to increase your body’s magnesium content.

So if you need a form of magnesium that is highly absorbed from the intestines into your blood stream you need to take the right kind of magnesium salts. The best absorbed forms of magnesium are five different salts of magnesium known as – magnesium orotate, chelate, phosphate, citrate and aspartate. Some people become confused because they think that aspartate is the same as the toxic artificial sweetener aspartame that is used to flavour diet drinks and foods – well it is not the same, it is completely different and is safe and natural.

Magnesium is a very active mineral in the body being required by over 300 enzyme systems which produce energy and efficient metabolism.

Magnesium deficiency is common in people with chronic fatigue syndrome, adrenal gland exhaustion and muscle weakness and muscle cramps. Magnesium stabilizes the electrical activity in nervous and muscular tissues where it produces a relaxing effect. This is why I often call magnesium The Great Relaxer as it really helps the entire nervous system to relax. Thus it is excellent for those with stress, poor sleep and anxiety or panic attacks. Magnesium has recently been proven to help those with depression because it helps to promote the production of serotonin. Because magnesium helps to stabilize electrical activity in the brain it can exert a powerful preventative effect against epileptic convulsions or fits. Magnesium does not interact with anti-convulsant drugs and so both can be taken together.

Magnesium promotes healthy circulation of blood to all parts of the body and strengthens the muscles of the heart. Thus it is useful to prevent heart failure and palpitations. Over many years of practising medicine Dr Cabot has found magnesium to be a wonderful supplement for those with high blood pressure and poor circulation. This is because magnesium relaxes the muscles in the arteries and this dilates the arteries so that blood flows more freely – thus we see a drop in blood pressure and an improvement in circulation to the periphery of the body encompassing the limbs and the pelvic organs.

In men with erectile dysfunction the regular daily use of a magnesium supplement can improve the quality and duration of their erections.

If you suffer with tightness in your muscles, feet and toes you will find that a regular magnesium supplement will bring relief and you will no longer wake up at night with painful muscle cramps!

Magnesium is very important for the metabolism of carbohydrates and diabetics or those with unstable blood sugar levels will often be low in magnesium. Supplementing with magnesium can improve blood sugar levels, as well as reducing cravings for sweet sugary foods.

Magnesium Can Help To Prevent Migraine Headaches

Several studies have shown that people who experience migraine headaches are more likely to be magnesium deficient. Supplementing with magnesium can help to reduce the frequency of migraines.

One study showed that people who took a magnesium supplement reduced the frequency of migraines by 41.6%, compared to 15.8% in people who took a placebo. A therapeutic dose of magnesium is between 200 and 600 milligrams daily.

Magnesium is found in green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds and muscle meat. If you are in excellent health, you may be able to meet your magnesium needs by including these foods in your diet. However, if you are trying to reduce the incidence of headaches, you will probably need a magnesium supplement, either in powder or tablet form.
