Kangen Water: What It Is and Why People Are Talking About It

If you’ve spent any time in natural health circles, you’ve probably heard someone rave about Kangen Water. It’s a brand of alkaline ionised water, produced by machines made by the Japanese company Enagic, and it’s become a fixture of the wellness world over the past two decades.

What makes it different from tap water?

A Kangen machine uses electrolysis to split ordinary tap water into two streams: an alkaline stream (higher pH, used for drinking) and an acidic stream (lower pH, typically used externally – for cleaning, skincare, or produce washing). The process also increases the water’s negative oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), which is why you’ll often hear Kangen water described as “antioxidant-rich.”

What are people hoping it will do?

Advocates point to a range of potential benefits, including:

  • Better hydration and a more palatable taste, which can encourage people to drink more water
  • Support for the body’s natural pH balance
  • Antioxidant properties, thanks to its negative ORP
  • Improved digestion for some users
  • A reduction in single-use plastic bottles, since the water is made fresh at home

What does the research actually say?

This is where it’s worth being honest: the science on alkaline water is still developing, and it’s more mixed than the marketing around it suggests. A small number of studies have looked at specific, narrower claims – for example, some research has explored alkaline water’s effect on acid reflux symptoms and on hydration during intense exercise, with modestly promising results in those specific contexts. But the broader claims you’ll sometimes see – that alkaline water can meaningfully shift your body’s overall pH, or prevent disease – aren’t well supported by strong clinical evidence. Your body tightly regulates its internal pH regardless of what you drink, mainly through your lungs and kidneys.

None of that means Kangen water is a bad choice. Plenty of people simply prefer the taste, like having filtered water on tap, or find that drinking more water (of any kind) improves how they feel day to day. It’s worth going in with realistic expectations rather than treating it as a medical treatment.

Is it worth the investment?

Kangen machines are a genuine investment for the long term so it’s worth trying the water first if you can, and talking to a local distributor about which model actually fits your household’s needs before committing.
