Jin Shin Jyutsu, a dynamic, fast acting form of vibrational therapy, has developed an international reputation through clearly differentiating itself from other bodywork modalities.

More than 18 years ago, international award winning film editor, Adriane Hartigan-von Strauch left her career and travelled from Germany to reside in New Zealand, where she began practising the healing art of Jin Shin Jyutsu.

Enlightened passion and deep trust are reflected in her journey of pioneering this ancient vibrational medicine modality in the South Pacific.

Recalling her introduction to the modality in 1991, in the first session of a five-day course, Adriane said she perceived the building blocks of her many years of study and experience in spirituality and natural health come together in one harmonious picture.

“Here was the ‘hub’, where all I had previously learned and integrated found its meeting place, reflecting all universal principles,” she said.

“I saw how Jin Shin Jyutsu was constructed of:

  • Traditional Oriental Medicine with the Art of Acupressure and Acupuncture
  • Vibrational Medicine with its energetic perspectives
  • Psychosomatic cause levels with their different contexts to Psychology and therapeutic viewpoints
  • The discovery of the modern Quantum Physics, which confirms the relationship between all cosmic and eternal living in our universe – and last but not least –
  • The Discovery of the sensitivity and sensations in my touching hands.”

Master Jiro Murai

Born of innate wisdom and passed down through generations by word of mouth, the Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu had fallen into relative obscurity until Master Jiro Murai in Japan dramatically revived it in the early 1900s. After clearing himself of life-threatening illness, Master Murai devoted the rest of his life to the research and development of Jin Shin Jyutsu, gathering insight from a range of experiences and resources, including the Kojiki (Record of Ancient Things).

The resulting knowledge of Jin Shin Jyutsu was then given to Mary Burmeister, who took it to the United States in the 1950s. Mary Burmeister began teaching the Art to others in the early 1960s, and today thousands of students are studying it throughout the United States and around the world.

“{quotes}Jin Shin Jyutsu is taught as a ‘Physio-Philosophy’ that helps us find the perfect expression of harmony within us,{/quotes}” Adriane said.

“It demonstrates a way of ‘Being’ – to understand and feel the cosmic oneness – and to know and help ourselves.

“In Jin Shin Jyutsu, each of us possesses the simplest instruments needed to bring about harmonious balance of the energy of body, mind and spirit: breath and hands, which can be used anywhere and at any time and in conjunction with any other therapy or medicine.”

When symptoms of poor health began dictating her own lifestyle, Adriane was inspired to use the Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu to its fullest.  She knew it would bring the results she needed.

“A realisation process had been gradually and unfolding within me during the first most transforming years of my relationship with this self-healing modality,” she said.

“I was fully aware that within each of us is an underlying harmony that is always present.

“The first tool for relaxing and removing energy blockages is the breath. {quotes}Breath is the basic expression of life energy; it is key to releasing stress and receiving renewed energy.{/quotes}

“Deep exhalation empties us so that we can receive life-giving energy through deep inhalation. The second set of tools is our hands, which follow naturally.”

Adriane said that Jin Shin Jyutsu was designed to bring balance to the body’s energies, which in turn promotes optimal health and facilitates the innate profound self-healing capacity.

“The universal life energy manifests itself in varying levels of density, referred to as ‘depths’,” she said.

“The ninth depth of energy is the most infinite and undifferentiated form, and it becomes denser through each of the successive eight depths and encompasses all of the spiritual, psychological and physical aspects of an individual’s existence.

“There are 26 ‘safety energy locks’ along energy pathways on each side of the body that act as ‘circuit-breakers’ (crosspoints of etherical and physical energy pathways) to protect the body when the flow of life energy is out of balance.

“When a safety energy lock shuts down, it manifests as a physical, mental or emotional symptom, which serves as a warning and indicates the source of the imbalance.

“Examples of this manifestation would be stress symptoms such as headache, backache, high blood pressure, allergies and emotional states, including depression and insomnia.

“These arise from a blockage of life energies and are referred to as labels – transferred into ‘projects’ or ‘issues’.

“In the world of Jin Shin Jyutsu, we seek to ‘work through’ rather than repress,” Adriane said.

“Chronic projects such as cancer or heart disease, indicate a major breakdown of life force in the body. Acute projects such as colds and seasonal ailments usually arise from current depletion of energy in our system.”

Sequences selected

To find the source of energy blockages, a Jin Shin Jyutsu practitioner reads the pulses in the person’s wrists. Appropriate Jin Shin Jyutsu sequences are selected and the practitioner uses two each of the safety energy locks referred to as “a flow” in gently touching points on the body to most effectively harmonise the body’s energy.

The Jin Shin Jyutsu practitioner then holds the fingertips of both hands (over clothing) on these safety energy locks to act like jumper cables as he or she harmonises and restores the energy flow.

This facilitates the reduction of tension and stress that accumulate through normal daily living, promotes innate healing capacity to alleviate symptoms, and helps the body, mind, and spirit to maintain optimal health and harmony.

A full session lasts about 60 to 75 minutes, usually supplemented by self-help techniques between sessions.

“Jin Shin Jyutsu is the art of re-awakening one’s awareness and understanding of ‘now know myself’,” Adriane said.

“We are all born with a profound delicate power to be able to enjoy our potentials to the fullest extent. Breathe and enjoy – be the smile!”
