The Plastic Free Foundation is Leading the Way in Reducing Single-Use Plastics

In a world where every action counts, it’s time to take a stand against the environmental impact of single-use plastics. By making conscious choices and embracing sustainable alternatives, we have the power to create lasting change.

Each year, billions of plastic items are used once and discarded, polluting our oceans, harming wildlife, and contributing to the ever-growing waste crisis. But fear not, for there is hope. By understanding the impact of our choices and taking proactive steps, we can significantly reduce our reliance on these harmful materials.

It starts with leading by example. By making simple changes in our everyday lives, we can inspire others to do the same. From carrying reusable water bottles and shopping bags to opting for metal straws and bamboo utensils, every small action adds up to a collective effort for a brighter future.

Reflecting on the Plastic Free July 2024 campaign

Plastic Free July Newsletter 01/08/2024 …

Plastic Free July has come to an end, and it’s amazing to see the global efforts to reduce single-use plastic. Millions of people have taken small steps to avoid single-use plastic across hundreds of different plastic items.

Over the month, participants have shared their stories and encouraged others, and as a result, we have no doubt that this movement of people committed to a future with less plastic waste has grown.

We thank you for being a part of this important community and inspiring others to take part. Change doesn’t stop now - our research shows 88% of participants make one or more changes that become new habits!

When many people make the switch to reusables, others get their offices on board, and a few contact businesses to ask for change, we collectively trigger systemic changes like brands changing packaging, plastic bans, and new producer laws.

Here are just a few of the changes around the world we’ve heard this July:

  • households shopping at farmers’ markets and taking reusable bags and boxes
  • people switching from disposable wipes to reusable cotton ones
  • whole workplaces making a Plastic Free Pledge to avoid single-use plastic bottles, cups and plastic wrap
  • a community in India setting up a reusables bank with a large set of stainless steel cutlery, glasses, plates, spoons and bowls to borrow for free
  • hotels switching from single-use plastic toiletries to providing items from refillable bottles
  • hundreds of community events from practical workshops to cleanups and movie screenings.

Town of East Fremantle

Seeking significant waste reduction at large-scale events, the Town of East Fremantle used its Sustainable Events Policy to roll out sustainable solutions for its George Festival.

Festival organisers teamed with Go2Cups, providing free reusable service wear to vendors.

Bin Monitors resulted in just 200 grams of contamination in the Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) bins and just 48kg of general waste at a festival with over 10,000 people.
