Have you ever had a romantic notion that it would be nice to travel around Australia in a campervan? Can you imagine what it me be like to live full time in an on road van?
Nomadland takes you on a journey through the eyes of Fern, into a cultural paradigm that we rarely acknowledge – people living on the edge of society as we know it.
This is an eye opener to the cultural problem of homelessness that could befall any of us if caught up in a downward economic cycle of loss. We are given a glimpse into the lives of real people who are living nomads in their campervans and caravans. They move from town to town following seasonal work – seeking to make ends meet. There is no happy ending to this movie… as life just keeps moving on. We share for a time the on screen, a window into the friendships that Fern strikes up with fellow travellers and see life from the flip side of the coin.
The synopsis:
Following the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada, Fern (Frances McDormand) packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad. The third feature film from director Chloé Zhao, NOMADLAND features real nomads Linda May, Swankie and Bob Wells as Fern’s mentors and comrades in her exploration through the vast landscape of the American West.
